  • Yerevan State Medical University after M. Heratsi ( YSMU ) in Armenia is a highly reputed medical university in the world and is one of the best in Eastern Europe .
  • It was founded in 1919 as a medical faculty of Yerevan State University and established as an independent Institution in 1930. Since then it has trained about 30000 physicians and pharmacists from 40 countries
  • YSMU is widely recognized all over the world including the Medical Council of India , IMC Act of 1956 (Gazette of India, Part II, Sec. 1, Extra, S. No. 83, dt. 31.12.1956); GMC (General Medical Council) of U.K.
  • The University is enlisted in the Directory of Higher Medical Institutions adopted by the World Health Organization ( WHO ).
  • According to "Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Act, 2001" all the Indian foreign medical graduates have to qualify the FMGE 'Screening Test' conducted by National Board of Examinations, New Delhi.
  • The last Indian batch of YSMU has given 97.8% as passing result of the Screening Test.
  • Around 650 Indian students are currently pursuing their graduate and post-graduate studies. Regular Indian batches since 1987 .
  • Vice-President of India Hon'ble Bhairon Singh Shekhawat was awarded Honorary Title of Doctor of Philosophy of YSMU when he visited Armenia in October 2005 during the 75th anniversary celebrations of the university (see Recommendations).
  • YSMU has recently introduced 'Guest Lectureship Program' inviting eminent doctors through the Ministry of Health from AIIMS, Maulana Azad Medical College , Safdarjung Hospital , Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital , Lady Hardinge Medical College ( Delhi ), JIPMER ( Pondicherry ), KGMC ( Lucknow ), LLRM Medical College ( Meerut ), Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College ( Indore ) and other reputed medical colleges and hospitals.
  • Many graduates are working successfully in various prestigious hospitals in India , UK , USA and European countries. Only in California , USA more than 500 university graduates carry out practical work.
  • According to the National Education Standards of the USA in the list of rating of medical schools, the YSMU is the 35 th in the rank order among the 80 leading international universities.
  • NIS Research Fund has published the rating of the most prestigious institutions, where the YSMU is mentioned among the best 10 Universities .
  • The University employs 2000 people on a full or part-time basis. Of those 750 are teaching staff and 200 involved in research. There are 700 professors , 300 associate professors and 7 academicians.
  • According to the European educational program, the University has four faculties: General Medicine, Stomatology, Pharmacy and Military Medicine. The University has a three degree educational system: Preparing specialists for general practice, preparing narrow specialists through residency programs, preparing scientific instructors through Ph.D. and Doctorate courses.
  • The structure of the University is that of a traditional European university. The governing bodies of the University are the University Council, the Rector, the Senate and the Student Council. Yerevan State Medical University is a state non-commercial organization. The University is under the Ministry of Education & Science and is financed by the government.
  • Yerevan State Medical University is a member of the International Association of Universities, which gives great opportunity in the sphere of development of international relations, students exchange, probation period abroad, participation in grant programs under the aegis of UNESCO joint research work and conferences.

CLINICAL HOSPITALS

The University has more than 15 clinical hospitals, where medical students are well trained. They are given an opportunity to provide competent medical services to the public as well as to carry out practical research work. In different specialized clinics foreign students are also familiarized with outpatient services as well as more complicated cases in the concerned departments. The hospitals where students get clinical training are well equipped with the latest apparatus, equipments and monitors.

SCIENTIFIC-RESEARCH CENTER (SRC)

In 1964 the central scientific research laboratory was founded and later in 1992 reorganized into the research center. It now consists of 8 scientific laboratories, where about 300 scientists carry out research in various medical disciplines. Seven groups of foreign students (four of which are Indian) participate in the scientific research activities carried out by the Center in the various fields of medical sciences. The scientists of the University have made valuable contributions towards the development of medical science. They have been awarded prestigious titles, International prizes and awards.

LIBRARY

The medical library of the University is one of the richest libraries. The research and academic stock is extremely rich. Today it comprises 650200 volumes, consisting of 170000 textbooks and handouts, 44500 monographs, reference books and periodicals. Being well equipped with modern technology, the library enables the students to obtain the latest information available. The library and the reading hall are widely used by the students till late evening hours.

HOSTEL ACCOMMODATION

Foreign students are provided with accommodation throughout the period of study. Separate hostels wings are provided for boys and girls on twin sharing basis. The hostels are furnished with basic amenities and are centrally heated. All facilities necessary for everyday life i.e. shop, mess, café, laundry, internet café, gymnasium & fitness center, etc. are available. A furnished private accommodation can be rented at affordable rate in the city. Indian food is offered in the hostel canteen and in a few Indian restaurants in the city. Presently, University provides complimentary breakfast to its students staying in the hostel.

The main purpose of activities is the exchange of scientific innovations, as well as the exchange of professors, doctors, lecturers, students, collaboration and implementation of various bilateral programs. Inter-governmental 'Balognia Agreement' with 49 European countries has been signed for mutual acceptance of the various educational programs.
YSMU has a membership in a number of international organizations including:

With state visit of the President of Armenia , Minister of Education and Science and the Rector of the Yerevan State Medical University to India in October 2003, close ties are established with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of India, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Medical Council of India (MCI), All India Institute of India (AIIMS) and Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR). Vice-President of India Hon'ble Bhairon Singh Shekhawat was awarded Honorary title of 'Doctor of Philosophy' of YSMU when he visited Armenia in October 2005 during the 75 th anniversary celebrations of the University. "Indian citizens have a good opportunity to gain necessary knowledge here and they must not miss it" he said. He also expressed readiness to render all possible assistance to the cooperation between Armenian and Indian educational institutions.
The University has recently introduced ' Guest Lectureship Program' inviting eminent doctors through the Ministry of Health from AIIMS, Maulana Azad Medical College, Safdarjung Hospital, Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, Lady Hardinge Medical College (Delhi), JIPMER (Pondicherry), King George Medical College (Lucknow), LLRM Medical College (Meerut), Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College (Indore) and other reputed medical colleges and hospitals.


ACADEMIC YEAR

Academic year consists of 36 weeks. It is divided into two terms (semester). The first term starts on 01 st of September and ends on 10 th of January (18 weeks), the second term starts on 7 th of February and end on 10 th of June (18 weeks). The term ends with tests and exams. The duration of vacations is 10 to 12 weeks (2 weeks in winter and 8 to 10 weeks in summer). During vacations students can come to India or visit other European countries or USA after attaining visas.
